Classical Highlights of Sri Lanka - 14 Days
Welcome to Sri Lanka. On your arrival our representative will receive you in Colombo International Airport and transfer you to Notary’s House, a local themed small hotel in the countryside of Sri Lanka situated just 45 minutes away from the Airport for an overnight stay. You could relax at the hotel chilling out by the pool for the rest of the day enjoying a great scenery form the hotel’s garden towards the paddy fields.
You will be transferred to the very heart of the cultural triangle for 3 nights stay in Dambulla, at one of the finest boutique hotels in Sri Lanka with a local and agricultural character. Kalundewa Retreat situated in a 100 acre farming field with chalets built on stilts on small lakes and surrounding paddy and vegetable fields. Upon check in, the afternoon is free for you to have a dip in the swimming pool and spend some relaxing time at the hotel.
Next day after breakfast our specialist village guide will receive you in Sigiriya for a unique trip in an open top classic jeep around Sigiriya Rock and nearby rural villages of Habarana. This authentic experience enables you to interact with locals, visit domestic farming fields of rice and vegetables, ancient irrigation lakes, village markets, see village vendors, ancient temples and many authentic local sights.
In the afternoon you could either opt to relax at the hotel or explore Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Sigiriya Rock Fortress a historical and architectural masterpiece built by King Kassapa in the 5th century.
On day three in Dambulla you could go to explore Polonnaruwa ruins, Polonnaruwa, was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993. It comprises, besides the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas, the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by great King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. The glory of the bygone era can be found in the archaeological treasures that still give a good idea of how the city looked in its glory days.
In the afternoon, you will be taken for a guided safari in Minneriya National Park with a naturalist to see Elephants in the wild. During the months of July and August you could see herds of Elephants large as 200 to 300 Elephants at once.
After breakfast, take a drive to Kandy, the most venerated city of Sri Lanka where Lord Buddha’s Tooth Relic now calls home at Kandy dynasty’s royal palace. On the way to Kandy, explore historical Dambulla Cave complex. Dambulla is the biggest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka and there are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings related to Gautama Buddha and his life. Dambulla cave and temple complex dates back to the first century.
You will be staying two nights in Kandy at Villa Rosa, a small quaint hotel in Kandy with some jaw dropping views of the distant mountains and flowing Mahaweli River.
On day two you will be joining a local family to cook an authentic Sri Lankan meal at their home. This experience starts with a visit to a local market in Kandy to buy the ingredients and spices for the cooking experience. At local family’s home you will be taught on the local spices during the cooking experience. This is a very good cultural and culinary experience with locals.
In the afternoon you could also visit to Kandy Temple of Tooth Relic where Buddha’s Tooth Relic is now housed to pay homage to it and witness centuries old pilgrim rituals.
After Kandy, you will be then heading to Ella for 3 nights for mountainous getaway. You will be booked for Kandy-Ella train which is one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. Though the journey takes 7 hours to reach Ella, it will be an interesting sightseeing trip with many different views of the countryside of Sri Lanka from Tea estates, rain frosts, farming fields, waterfalls and sleepy villages.
When you reach Ella, you will be then transferred to Koslanda, a quaint village 45 minutes away from Ella town where you will be staying for the next three nights at Koslanda Living Heritage boutique hotel, a gem of a place away from the hustle and bustle of Ella town. Koslanda Living Heritage Hotel is built in an extensive plot of land which consists of a forest patch. The swimming pool at Koslanda Living Heritage posses a commanding view of the distant mountains.
When in Koslanda, you would be able to do some scenic mountainous walks in Ella such as Little Adam’s Peak, 9 arch bridge and also do a Tuk Tuk ride in a Tea estate followed by a walk in the estate. Or you may opt to relax at the hotel. Koslanda Living Heritage is truly a living heritage in its true sense of the word as it provides various nature and cultural experiences within and around its premises with non touristic walks to Hindu Temples, small tea estates, paddy fields and villages.
After Ella, you will be driven to Yala, the most popular National park of Sri Lanka due to its high Leopards density. Yala is now considered one of the best places to see the elusive big cats. You will be staying a night at Yala Safari Camp, an all inclusive tented safari camping experience with an afternoon and morning guided safaris in Yala National Park. Before dinner, sundowners will be served on a rock cliff at the camp amidst a roaring campfire followed by dinner.
Finally you are at the beach in the south coast beach of Thalpe, near Galle at Apa Villa boutique hotel. When not relaxing by the sea you could visit markets in Galle, Turtle hatcheries and also much famed Galle Dutch Fort built by the Portuguese and later occupied by the Dutch settlers.
If you wish to cycle in the interior countryside in Galle or go for Whale watching off the coast of Mirissa, it could be arranged on request.
When in Apa Villa, Unawatuna beach is just 15 minutes ride in a Tuk Tuk. Unawatuna is a lively beach with lots of seafood restaurants on the beach and that is not all, Unawatuna Bay and Jungle Bay area is very famous for its coral reefs where you could go snorkeling.
The last day of your trip in this tropical Island of Sri Lanka, after breakfast you will be transferred to Colombo International Airport for the flight back home.
